The Recruit Review

The Recruit
The Recruit is a book written by Robert Muchamore; this novel is the first book of the CHERUB series. It is an action, thriller, spy book which mainly targets teenagers to read it.
To start off, The Recruit is about a boy named James Choke who is frequently bullied at school because of his obese mother. The book starts off in James' secondary school during a Combined Science lesson. Samantha Jennings sat next to him (Samantha was a big bully but the teachers thought that she was a fantastic little girl). Samantha was always winding James about how fat his Mum is. She has a load of cronies who always laugh at whatever insult comes out of her mouth, even when it isn't that funny. However, this didn't last long as halfway through another one of Samantha's cusses, James jumped up, shouted at her and warned her that if she did it again she would be in a lot of trouble. But Samantha went on until  James grabbed her and threw her against the wall. Her face had a long cut where blood was pouring out. He went home, more scared than angry.
He arrives home with his mother intoxicated and suddenly on the next day she is dead. From that moment, many other events occur throughout the book, and it begins with James being sent to a children's care home where he is looked after for a while but occasionally gets in trouble with the police. Then, one morning he wakes up in a campus which is part of the CHERUB organization which uses children to find information about terrorists and drug dealers as it is less suspicious. CHERUB explains to James why he came and soon he is put through some tests and 100 days of tough training which he passes.

There are 12 other books in the Cherub series and Muchamore has two other series: Cherub Series 2 (which currently has three books and many more are coming) and the Henderson's Boys Series (which has 7 books).
